BREWERS NEWS

C-C Sabathia won his first start for the Milwaukee Brewers last night, 7-to-3 over Colorado at Miller Park. After being traded from Cleveland for four prospects, Sabathia threw six innings in front of a rare Tuesday night sell-out crowd of 42-thousand-plus. He gave up three runs on five hits, with five walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer in the first inning to put Milwaukee in front for good. The Rockies scored twice in the sixth inning to get within one. But the Brewers pulled away with three in the seventh. Rickie Weeks had a double and two singles, and scored three times. Yorvit Torrealba drove in a pair for Colorado, which lost for just the second time in its last eight games. Mark Redman took the loss, giving up four runs in five innings. He’s now 2-and-4. The Brewers kept pace in the National League Central, as the Cubs and Cardinals both won. Milwaukee remains four games away from the division lead, and a half-game back for the N-L Wild Card. The Brewers and Rockies will play again tonight. All-Star right-hander Ben Sheets goes against former Brewers’ left-hander Glendon Rusch.

Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin said he knew the Chicago Cubs would trade for pitching. And they did yesterday – sending four players to Oakland for starter Rich Harden and reliever Chad Gaudin, both right-handers. The Cubs gave up three players who split time between the Majors and Triple-“A” – right-hander Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, and infielder Eric Patterson. They also sent Class-“A” catcher Eric Patterson to the “A’s.” Some observers thought the deal was a knee-jerk reaction to Milwaukee’s big trade for C-C Sabathia. But Cubs’ G-M Jim Hendry insisted he had informal talks for weeks about Harden. Meanwhile, Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio said yesterday he would not rule out another deal before the July 31st non-waiver trading deadline. The 26-year-old Harden has not made 30 starts in a season since 2004, due to various injuries. He’s 5-and-1 this year with a two-point-three-four E-R-A in 13 starts. Harden only made 16 starts in 2006-and-’07 combined, while suffering from back-and-arm injuries. His career mark is 36-and-19. The 25-year-old Gaudin is 5-and-3 in 20 relief outings and six starts. His E-R-A is three-point-five-nine.

BUCKS HAVE SIGNED FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICE

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed first-round draft choice Joe Alexander to a contract worth four-point-one million dollars in his first two years. There’s also a team option for two more years, totaling five-point-two million dollars for both. The 21-year-old Alexander is a 6-8 forward from West Virginia. He was the eighth overall pick in last month’s draft. Alexander played three years with the Mountaineers, and he averaged almost 17 points and six-and-a-half rebounds a game last season. General manager John Hammond says Alexander will play mostly at power forward – and he could also get time at the small forward spot. Alexander and second-round forward Luc Richard Mbah-a-Moute worked out yesterday with the Bucks’ summer league team. They’ll play their first game on Saturday in Las Vegas against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Former Packers’ general manager Ron Wolf is moving back to Green Bay – but don’t expect him to meddle in the team’s affairs. He says he’ll limit his involvement to a couple days at training camp – just like he does every summer. Wolf was the Packers’ G-M from 1992-to-2001. Since retiring, he has lived in Annapolis Maryland and has spent his winters in Jupiter Florida. Wolf’s wife Edie was a psychologist in Green Bay during her husband’s time with the Packers. Wolf says both love the city, and they’re excited about moving back. Their son Eliot is the Packers’ assistant director of pro personnel under Reggie McKenzie.

Packers’ president Mark Murphy and retired C-E-O Bob Harlan both say that in their minds, Brett Favre is still retired. Both officials are part of the team’s “Tailgate Tour” which took off yesterday for a trip around the state. Murphy says he’s not surprised that Favre has the itch to come back. He says careers never end the way the players want – and that’s why Favre is doing what he is. A Milwaukee T-V station said Favre sent a text message over the weekend to general manager Ted Thompson, but the G-M refused to meet with him until he got back from vacation. Yesterday, both Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy returned to their offices – and neither commented.
